Parking, Patience and Procedures

Construction of our new Makom has started and the back parking lot at the Temple is closed. I know that having only the few limited spaces in the front of the building will be a challenge for all of us.

Carol Clingan and her  committee have worked hard to come up with a parking plan that creates as much of a win-win scenario for everyone as they can – something that respects the staff who are here each day working on behalf of our community, as well as the members of the congregation. To that end, you will notice that every space in front of the temple has both an assigned number and a sign in front of it.  There are spaces reserved for our clergy, for handicap parking, for people who are here for just 15 minutes and those who might be here for an hour.

The rest of the spaces are to be shared by both the staff and the congregation. That means that some of the time the spaces will be reserved for those who are here on a regular and consistent basis, working on behalf of the community; staff, religious school teachers, adult education teachers, and b’nei mitzvah tutors.  However, there are often times when many spaces do not need to be reserved, such as evenings and Shabbat. The challenge was to find a system where we could easily indicate when a space was or was not reserved, thus the numbered spaces and signs in front of each space.

We have developed a schedule for each day of the week, and for each numbered space, tracking when it needs to be reserved and when it is available for open parking.  On most mornings, the spaces will be reserved for staff.  However, twice a day, once around 2 PM and again around 6 PM, a member of our custodial staff will be checking the signs and making sure that those spaces that can be available for afternoon and/or evening parking are so indicated. These signs read “Space Available until 7:00 a.m. No Permit Required.”

I ask that you respect the wording on the signs, and if you come to the temple, no matter what time of day, and there is a space open but is indicated as being reserved, that you please not park in it.  Side street parking is always available and Schofield is available weekdays after 3:30 p.m. and on weekends.

Todah Rabah (Thanks so very much),
Cindi Crutchfield, Executive Director
