Letter from Makom Committee, chair, Susan Solomont

Dear Friends,

The Makom Committee was formed in May 2005 to strategically think and coordinate our effort to build a new spiritual home that will preserve the spirit of our Temple and meet the growing and diverse needs of our synagogue community.

Makom is a Hebrew word with far reaching meanings. It is often defined as “sacred space, like a synagogue, to a divine one, as one of Gods names.” We chose to name The Campaign for Beth Elohim’s steering committee 'MAKOM,' as it is a omnipresent idea, consisting of endless segments of our consciousness of being and belonging to a place.

Over 50 years ago Temple Beth Elohim was founded by a group of men and women who made their home in Boston’s western suburbs. Our founding families wanted to connect with each other and provide a warm and welcoming environment to others as they established their homes and began raising children. The congregation grew from a hundred to over 860 families today. From our earliest days Temple Beth Elohim has offered many programs and services that were designed to fulfill the varied needs of our members. As chair of the Makom Committee I invite you to become involved in our Comprehensive Building and Endowment Campaign. The congregation voted to undertake a $25 - 30 million dollar Campaign for our new home and to enhance our Endowment Fund in May 2006. Together we can preserve the vision of our founders and create new synergies for learning, spirituality, acts of loving kindness and connections to one another.

Throughout the Makom section of our web site you will be able to learn about the various committee responsibilities, people who are involved in securing our future, progress of the campaign and plans for our new “home away from home”.

Sincerely,

Susan Lewis Solomont
