Looking for convenience and proximity to their home in Wellesley, Theresa and Steven Levy affiliated with Temple Beth Elohim in 2000 as their oldest child Jacob came of age to enroll in kindergarten. But what they found was much more. As an interfaith couple, Theresa and Steve experienced TBE’s warmth and acceptance and liked the dynamic infusion of social values throughout the congregation. According to Steve, “TBE provides multiple gateways for individuals to pursue life’s path to meaning.”  As Jacob was joined by sisters Anna and Samantha, the Levy’s became more involved in the school and the vibrancy of the congregation. Their participation in the Beit Midrash program has brought the family together to share and study in ways neither parent had experienced during their own childhoods. The Beit Midrash program “strengthens families while building community. It creates an awareness of social issues that our children are often shielded from,” according to Steve. From knowing few congregants in 2000, the Levy’s now have an expanded network of friends and acquaintances through the sharing of tikkun olam and participating in Mitzvah project initiatives. Theresa remarked that “The temple lives the values it preaches which enriches our family.” With a young family and daily pressure of time, the Levy’s look forward to a new Beit Elohim that will become an inviting place, and not where you just drop the kids off and run. They look forward to a time when they can come and relax, sit on comfortable couches and chairs, read a book or magazine, take a cooking class or listen to music, share a conversation or game of chess in a quiet and relaxed manner while enjoying a good cup of coffee. “Our new Beit Elohim will help foster our awareness of community and the importance of shared experiences,” said Steve.
