How awe-inspiring is this place! This is none other than a Beit Elohim. - Genesis 28:17 September 10, 2010

Walking through the doors of the Temple, a feeling of calm and acceptance is experienced by Beth Fleming, a junior at Newton North High School. “It is like a haven, a place I have come to know and where I feel comfortable. I have good relationships with our clergy, and have no qualms dropping in one of their offices to talk or corresponding with them by email.”

Last fall, Beth Fleming watched, listened, and asked a few questions during a reception her parents were hosting for the new Building and Campaign in their home. At the conclusion of the formal program, Beth approached Lynda Bussgang, campaign chair, and offered her own Campaign gift: “I offered my gift to the Temple because I felt emotionally compelled and was in the position to do so. I truly don't feel that my contribution was extraordinary, rather, just a given. This Temple means a lot to me and my family as well as many of my generation. No one should be hemming and hawing over whether they're obligated to give. In my mind, we should all provide the financial resources for our new Temple. I’m fortunate to be able to share the gifts of money I received when I became a Bat Mitzvah, and hope that others will give what they can.”

At Newton North, Beth enjoys participating in theatre, dance, the gospel choir and studying archaeology and ancient civilizations, in addition to perfecting her Italian. Beth is beginning to look at colleges, and even though she hopes to attend school out side of the Boston area, she anticipates the day when she will be able to walk down the aisle of our new Temple when she marries. “Having Rabbi Sisenwine and Cantor Sufrin greet me under the Chuppah will be very magical, meaningful and add to joy I hope to experience some day, in our new Temple.”

Over the years, Beth has maintained relationships with old TBE friends through an occasional Shabbat service or through “Facebook.” “I am also fortunate to have gained the acceptance and friendship of several adults in the congregation, mostly my parents' friends, and enjoy our discussions very much.”

“Our Temple is a very special place with many dedicated people; unfortunately, our current building is not physically attractive or able to house all of the activities and events that are offered each year. We need adequate space to provide for our needs today, and for the coming years. The Temple represents ‘family, love and community’ to me, and our new ‘home’ will happen if we all join together and give what we can afford. I view supporting The Campaign for Temple Beth Elohim as a way to not only turn our dream for a new building into reality, but as a means to support all the individuals who comprise our community.”

“I look forward to the day when our Clergy, educators and staff have real offices, and not closets to work in, where our youth can gather in a real ‘lounge,’ and where we can all take pride in the building itself. I not only hope that the adults will give their resources but that others my age will support the new building. There are many teens who have benefited from the social, educational, and spiritual nature of the temple, and by adding their support we will be making our new home a reality that much sooner. The future of TBE can’t be just a dream!”

Beth is the daughter of Amy and Jonathan Fleming. Donating her Bat Mitzvah gift money for the new building is an act of generosity and a Mitzvah that reflects the devotion inspired youth have towards the growth of our community.
